Introduction
"Lynn Hightower is a brave, bold writer - and this spooky, suspenseful masterpiece could be her best yet. Super-recommended!" ? Lee Child, #1 international bestselling author, on The Enlightenment Project
Cutting-edge science meets demonic possession: the long-awaited new supernatural thriller from award-winning author Lynn Hightower.
Have you ever known anyone who survived being possessed? You do now. You’ve met me.
That night, late in the OR, exhausted after hours on my feet, topped off with a late night emergency surgery . . . I felt the presence. I stopped for a moment, then, wisely, I ignored it. Wisely, I looked away.
It was the small moments, just like this one, that changed a life. When the crossroad comes, you do not recognize it. You do not know it until afterward, looking back. But this is when it began. Again.

Discussion Questions
1. "Have you ever known anyone who survived being possessed? You do now. You've met me." Were you shocked to find out that a neurosurgeon like Noah Archer had been possessed as a child? What did you think of the effect childhood trauma had on his life? That it came out physically when he was under the same threat. How it motivated him to start The Enlightenment Project. Are there ways a childhood trauma can haunt us and ways it can make us into resilient and more compassionate adults? Have you seen this happen in your life or with people that you know?
2."Think of nothing. Count your breaths. Go inward. Go to a place where you do not exist. How does that help anybody at the end of a long hard day, much less someone with their back to the wall? . . . All it does is put people in the position of wrestling with their brain..." Did you agree with Noah when he said that meditation was crucial, but that people are given useless techniques? Do you meditate? Do these techniques work for you? What advice would you give to someone who is in distress and wants to meditate but can't figure out how?
3. "I have to know why you kept this a secret. Why you didn't trust me. Why I wasn't good enough . . . for you to tell." Noah's wife, Moira, is deeply wounded to learn that Noah was possessed as a child and underwent a successful series of exorcisms. She feels betrayed by his secrets, and that she does not know him. And cannot trust him. Do you think Noah had the right to keep this private? What effect do you think it has on a marriage when one spouse keeps such essential information private? Do you think it always creates a distance between them? Do you think Moira had a right to know?
4. "Shut it down, Noah...I know the good you've done . . . It's just. Too. Dangerous." Perry insists Noah shut The Enlightenment Project down when it proves to create as much evil as it does good. But Noah is conflicted. So many of his patients are having crucial and life changing success -- dealing with depression, and addiction. Do you think Noah should shut the project down? Do you think he can find a way to keep it safe, or do you think it is just too risky?
5. "What are you telling me? Abandon my husband?" She was going to make me say it. "Yes, I'm sorry, I think that's your only choice." How did you feel when Noah told Barbara to abandon her husband and refused to keep helping her? Do you think he abandoned her? Or just acknowledged her freedom to make the choice? Do you think he did what he had to do to keep his family safe?
