Introduction
This is a beautiful and fascinating novel that will keep readers hooked." San Francisco Book Review
What if a 70-year-old letter from World War II changed the course of your life?
While attending Valor of the ’40s, art director Stephanie Britain stumbles upon a flea market selling letters from the war. She buys a handful, hoping they’ll inspire the redesign for a client’s website at her branding and design firm. She’s at first drawn by the lost art of penmanship, but soon discovers a hidden treasure nestled inside declarations of love from homesick soldiers.
Stephanie enlists a coworker to translate one and realizes it’s not a love letter after all. When a shocking discovery about a client causes Stephanie to question her principles and dedication to her firm’s business, she’s forced to make a difficult decision—one that could give her peace of mind, yet ruin her career in the process.
In AMONG THE BRANDED, Linda Smolkin explores family life, an unexpected friendship, and moral conflicts that make us wonder what’s more important: our livelihood or our beliefs. Fans of Sarah’s Key and The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult will enjoy this captivating novel about family, history, and difficult choices.
Discussion Questions
1) Do you have a favorite character from the book? If so, what was it about the character that made you choose him or her?2) How do you feel about the way Stephanie handled her moral dilemma at work? Would you have handled it the same way? If not, how would you have handled it differently?
3) The concept of "surprising discoveries" underpins the plot to Among The Branded. First, it's a letter Stephanie finds that was written during WWII, and then it was her workplace discovery. Have you had similar experiences where you've uncovered or found out something that has changed your life?
4) In the book, several characters are dealing with the loss of loved ones, and they seem to mourn in different ways. Some use humor to get through it and some try to stay busy or just move on. Do you think it's okay to mourn in different ways? Do you think there should be a time limit on grieving?
5) Even though Among the Branded is contemporary fiction, it does have historical elements specifically about WWII and the Holocaust. What did you think about the author sprinkling in these details? Also, was there anything you learned that you didn't know about before reading the book?
6) If Among the Branded were made into a movie, who would you choose to play the cast of characters?
