Foods and discussion

We had tea and scones which seemed a good thing with this novel set in Britain. Most of our discussion centered on marriage and the meaning of pilgrimage.
Turn of Mind by Alice LaPlante is an excellent mystery with the added twist of the main character's falling into Alzheimer's.
by dminor (see profile) 11/20/12
LaPlante keeps the readers interested as Dr. Jennifer White, noted orthopedic surgeon, falls deeper and deeper into dementia. To complicate matters, Dr. White's two children have an unsatisfactory relationship with their mother, and Dr. White's best friend is murdered. What connection does the murder have to Dr. White if any? Read the book to find out!

This book is somewhat on the slower side of starting, however it is worth your wait to stick with it. I would recommend to a "middle age" book club as well.

Such a lovely coming of middle age novel. It is a charming journey of self discovery and gave our book club a wealth of topics to discuss passionately.
I highly recommend this great first novel.

This book carries you along and is completely engaging. There are moments of humor and many more of touching inspiration. The overall theme is faith and doubt (in a non-religious sense). The characters... (read more)

"The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry"by brumery (see profile) 11/28/12

A very moving and beautifully written book that demonstrates the continual tension between faith (in life, onesself, others) and doubt. It moved me to tears at some points. The book slowly, elegantly reveals... (read more)

I started reading The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and could not stop. Harold and his wife Maureen live sadly separate lives in the same house. An unexpected note from a long ago colleague sends Harold... (read more)
