Major Pettigrew's Last Stand grew from Simonson's idea to present an Englishman as what people thought them to be and then peel off the façade to show that Englishmen are individuals too.
She wanted to show that the English are not at all always looking like they live in a BBC drama. The idea of having to craft a relationship between two people who seem to be different in every way possible was a challenge she gave to herself...
