A Man of His Word

When Moriah Byler married Levi Miller, she thought they would share a long life together. She is astonished when one day he abruptly leaves the Order, and her along with it. She is hopeful that they'll reconcile, but Levi has a fatal accident. Unbeknownst to him, Moriah is pregnant.

Moriah finds herself alone and unsure where to turn. She's reticent about trusting her heart to anyone. What Moriah doesn't know is that Levi's twin, Gabriel, has loved her for years, but has kept this to himself. Gabriel is a man of his word--and a man of God's word. After another unexpected tragedy, Moriah must learn to unguard her heart and accept his love so she can be made whole again.

Chapter 1
“I hope nothing else goes wrong.”
Moriah Byler held her needle in midair and frowned at her younger sister, Elisabeth. “’Tis just a tiny tear in the sleeve.”
“Of your wedding dress. On your wedding day!” Elisabeth gestured at the pale blue garment laid over Moriah’s lap. “Isn’t that bad luck or something?”
With a chuckle, Moriah resumed her stitching. “Nee. Besides, I don’t believe in such a thing as gut or bad luck. Once I get this sleeve repaired, everything will be fehlerfrei.”
Elisabeth clasped her hands together. “Oh, I pray it will be so.” She went to Moriah and sat down next to her on the bed.
Beams of brilliant sunlight streamed through the window of the bedroom they shared, making it easy for Moriah to form the tiny stitches needed to close the small gap in the left sleeve. She and her mother had finished the dress two weeks ago, and at the time neither woman had noticed the flaw. Only when Moriah had taken the dress out of the closet a few minutes ago did she see the tear. As usual, her fifteen-year-old sister had overreacted. A small rip in the sleeve of her wedding dress certainly didn’t herald bad things to come. Especially today, the day she’d waited for since she turned sixteen. ... view entire excerpt...

Discussion Questions

From the publisher:

1. When we meet Gabriel, he is struggling to hide his love from his sister-in-law Moriah. He’s also trying to deal with the guilt of coveting his brother’s wife. Have you ever wanted something you couldn’t have? How did you handle those feelings?

2. When Levi leaves Moriah, she blames herself for his abandonment. Why does she choose to believe she is a fault instead of Levi? Is there such a thing as a “right” way for her to respond?

3. Rachel resents her brother Aaron. Is it justified? Why or Why not?

Notes From the Author to the Bookclub

A Note from the Author to BookMovement readers:

The theme of A Man of His Word is trust- opening yourself to trusting God and trusting others after betrayal. I wanted to explore that theme within the context of an Amish community. I live close to Middlefield, OH, the fourth largest Amish community in North America, and wanted to highlight this wonderful area. My hope for readers is that they find A Man of His Word a satisfying and enjoyable story.
