Introduction

In Strangers Tend to Tell Me Things--her follow-up memoir to the NYT bestselling The Mighty Queens of Freeville--America's most popular advice columnist, "Ask Amy," shares her journey of family, second chances, and finding love.

By peeling back the curtain of her syndicated advice column, Amy Dickinson reveals much of the inspiration and motivation that has fueled her calling. Through a series of linked essays, this moving narrative picks up where her earlier memoir left off.

Exploring central themes of romance, death, parenting, self-care, and spiritual awakening, this touching and heartfelt homage speaks to all who have faced challenges in the wake of life's twists and turns. From finding love in middle-age to her storied experience with stepparenting to overcoming disordered eating to her final moments spent with her late mother, Dickinson's trademark humorous tone delivers punch and wit that will empower, entertain, and heal.

Discussion Questions

• The title refers not only to Amy’s job as “Ask Amy,” America’s most widely-syndicated advice columnist, but also life-long phenomenon of being the one in whom many people—even slight acquaintances—confide. Are you that person? Who is that person for you? What community responsibility do “secret keepers” have?

• Jane Hamilton has the most delightful line in the blurb she provide for STRANGERS TEND TO TELL ME THINGS. She says there’s a line on page 169 that makes her laugh whenever she thinks of it. Turn to page 169 and … do you feel the same?

• Blended families like Amy’s and Bruno’s have fascinating dynamics. What stood out to you as most relatable? How did you feel about the resilience that these two mature people to forge a circle of love, and a family unit, out of desire as well as need?

• Loss: how do we feel about it? Did Amy’s grief recall to you some specific moment in your own life? How did you find solace? After reading this, how would you celebrate the people you’ve loved but lost?
