Introduction

Deep in the woods of Wisconsin, little Mary Martin has been missing for five weeks. Clare had finally gotten deep into the Sunday newspaper late in the evening, and she might not have noticed her childhood friend Derek Watkins at all had she not accidentally glimpsed his truck headlamps lighting up the edge of her driveway over the top of the newsprint.
