"Interesting & fast read" by julialily (see profile) 08/13/08

An interesting book delving deep into human psychology. It is short but packs a strong punch.

"A fast read and will lead to good discussion on human nature" by rodish (see profile) 01/16/09

It was easy to pull yourself into the world of the lead characters, and think about how you would react to the situations it presents. The story deals with complex relationship issues between a teenager and an older woman. Even though the physical relationship ends with little communication, the emotional relationship remains throughout the lives of both of them, and leads them to things they could never imagine happening in their lives.

"The power of a "first love" is captured here." by teatime (see profile) 01/26/09

This story is highly recommended. From the very beginning it is captivating and sends the reader on a journey totally unexpected. Morally challenging. The author sets the tone with a love story of two unlikely people and takes readers on a journey through history at the same time.

"The story human reaction to power and losing their identity and sense of reality" by azariapour (see profile) 03/30/09

It is a different story about what happened in concentration camps and how it happened.

a poignant story about a young 15 year old German boy that has an affair with an older woman. This book is sensative and deep as it unveils the lives of the characters. It is facinating and compelling.

"Small Book Packing a Powerful Punch" by coldstreampond (see profile) 02/26/10

Somber, quick read that draws you in with a mysterious, melancholy story. Thought-provoking and worthwhile.

It was a really great book and well written. The subject matter was provocative and also morally questionable. I felt the anxiety and pain of both characters choices, which made me enjoy the book more because it was gripping. It was very sad and pitiful at the same time. Good discussion book.

I liked The Reader more than I thought I would considering one of the themes. I didn’t know about the p*doph*lia aspect of it until the movie came out. I’ve wanted to read this book for awhile because it’s German, and I’ve also looked forward to the movie because I love Kate Winslet. I saw an online interview with Winslet in which she questioned whether or not the age of 15 was really still p*doph*lia. And while I agree that the age of 10 is in a different category than the age of 15 when it comes to s*x*ality, I still believe what Hanna did with Michael was wrong, and I believe that both the author and the narrator of the book do as well.

Of course, Hanna’s wrongs and shortcomings go far beyond her relationship with Michael, and those themes are of extreme interest as well. This would be a great discussion book, and I can definitely see why it would be great for book clubs.

I didn't totally dislike the book but I didn't like it either. Somewhere between the two. It does give you a lot to think about and could be a good discussion book. Maybe it was just me, but I felt like there was something lost in the book.
