"Indian Culture and Friendship" by Beige (see profile) 10/01/08

Divakaruni writes very well about a different life and a different time in India. Two close friends grow and learn about life.

"A great cultural study, my favorite genre of books!!" by Rhapsody (see profile) 12/08/08

This is a very well written book, with lots of beautiful descriptions of another culture. The story line moves along perfectly and I call it a real page-turner. Around every corner there were suprises that really kept the reader guessing. My book club unanamously loved this book and it was a favorite for almost all of us. I highly reccommend this book. One book club member had one complaint - she didn't like how the ending left her wondering what would happen next. Here is the greatest gift of all - the author wrote a sequel about these characters.

"Couldn't put it down" by Wendy56 (see profile) 01/22/10

An extremely well written book that I wasn't able to put down. It is a book that you want to keep reading but are sad to see it end. The writer is able to pull you into the lives of Anju and Sudha and draws you into a different world, different culture. The trials and joys they encounter touch your heart.

Enjoyed very much--the relationship between the 2 girls is very interesting --to watch it grow and change but on a "base" level remain so devoted--

"Great book -- I could see it as a movie" by robkre18 (see profile) 04/09/11

Enjoyed it, interesting story with surprises, loved the different relationships among the characters.

"sister of my heart" by msharry (see profile) 08/08/11

Thoroughly enjoyed this book as did my book club. Very real, sympathetic characters caught up in lives filled with character-defining choices in a world where seemingly less choices are available. What a tribute to self-sacrificing friendship that truly constitutes "sisterhood".

"Beautiful Story" by alsgal (see profile) 02/15/12

So well written! I loved the attention paid to every detail. What an amazing history of a friendship - sisterhood. Because come on don't we all have that one friend who should have been our sister?

An engaging book, some mystery, great character development and story.

"Sister of My Heart" by clstarr (see profile) 06/11/12

Sweet book but certainly not my favorite. Informative about traditional Indian marriages I found interesting. But a few things in book where unconvincing. Predictable.

The book was very well written. I found it interesting based in India. I didn't think it was great, but good,

"Much to discuss" by awr115 (see profile) 06/23/12

Our book club really liked this selection. There is much to discuss on the topics of friendship, family loyalty, feminism, cultural differences/similarities...The author weaves twists into the book so you arent' really sure how it will end up.

"Sister of my Heart" by DebbiJ (see profile) 08/23/12

I really enjoyed the book, learned a lot about the Indian culture. There were times I was confused and had to go back to the beginning to figure out who was who. At times, the book moves slowly. Over all good book.

Beautifully written, this story of two young girls and their paths into womanhood, takes the reader to India of the 1980s. There are secrets and lies, stories and gossip, sadness and separation, but their bond to each other remains strong and true.
