"Personable, humourous, intellectual, and adventurous portrayl of Poitier's trials and tributes" by catmanalang (see profile) 04/16/07

This was a highly fascinating read and definitely one of those books that you do not want to put down. As I read it on the subway during my morning commutes, I could not help but laugh at his comical sense. He is admired for his wit, talent, and determination to succeed during a time where others attempted to leash him.

"This book contains many springboards for discussion in book clubs." by dsouza (see profile) 05/25/07

Sidney Poitier is a man who has obviously spent time in thinking about his life, how his experiences shaped him and what he believes. You have to admire any person who has such a sense of self and examines himself that closely. My book club found that this book gave us many springboards for discussion of social issues. We also now have a great deal of interest in seeing his movies and finding out even more about this fascinating man.

"So much I didn't know..." by dmc1230 (see profile) 08/03/07

I've always liked Sidney Poitier as an actor but I knew nothing about his life as a boy and young man, This was a lovely book. Spiritual without being preachy. I have a whole new respect for Mr. Poitier!

"Mr. Poitier is not a writer." by judy (see profile) 02/13/08

I like Sidney Poitier but did not particularly care for this book.

"A Fabulous Autobiography" by Barry1776 (see profile) 05/22/11

Sidney Poitier is a superb writer. The intelligence, insight and poise he brought to his movie roles are reflected in his prose and in his life.

From a dirt poor upbringing by wonderful parents on tiny Cat Island in the Bahamas, to the heights of international fame, Poitier has taken the time to learn the lessons of a lifetime and share them in a richly powerful and beautifully written memoir.

Highly recommended!

It's OK....at times I felt he had help in writing this book....was a little "too beautiful" for a person who had to go through as much as he did to achieve what he did!
