I will be recommending this powerful book to my book club. Diamant is so skillful at bringing to light the human side of history! It doesn't take long to become totally immersed in the harrowing stories of survival, heroism and hope. I was both thankful and sorry that it was a fairly short book. Thankful, because it was emotionally draining. Sorry because I wanted to spend more time with these women and know more about their lives in Israel. Book club discussions will be deep and wide and relevant to today's headlines.

After The Red Tent, our group expected much more. There was little flow to the narrative and none of us could care about the protaganists, which, as they represented the surviving women of the holocaust, made us feel guilty. VERY DISAPPOINTING.

Maybe we've read just too many WWII books this year, so we may be suffering from overload. The book dragged in places, and the characters were stereotypical. We did not know that Holocaust survivors were interned when they came to Israel by the British in camps very similar to those of the Nazis. This was shocking to us. Certainly a book worth reading.

Eye opening story of the way it was for them. The strength to continue on and survive after losing everything. Totally awestruck and captivating throughout the book. Loved it.
