I picked this book up because there was an article about the author in "Ohio" magazine as she and her husband run a restaurant/bar in Cleveland, Ohio. I was intruigued that someone from the Killing Fields would be living so differently now. The story is incredible, and she tells it well, looking full-face into the horrors she experienced as a very young child from an upper-middle class family forced to try to survive during the Cambodian civil war. A wake-up call to Middle Class America, for sure, to realize the rest of the world is not as fortunate as we are, and not to take freedom for granted.

Well written, well told story. Much honesty from the author as she reveals her feelings as a child. A VERY GOOD CHOICE for clubs. THe material is heavy, but reminded me that we are SO VERY sheltered and blessed in America.

Beautiful and sadly dramatic story of a girl struggle growing up in brutal times.

A heartwrenching story which shows the amazing power of the human spirit to overcome adversity , and the destructive and evil nature of others. Not a literary masterpiece, but a well written account of a little publicized atrocity.

I read this book while in Cambodia, and it will stay with me forever. That at least one-fourth of a country were slaughtered is an unbelievable horror. We need to know about these things so we never stand by and let them happen in other countries.
