"Fun book, but not a good one for book club discussion" by mrooney70 (see profile) 02/07/07

I enjoyed reading this book. It was fun and easy to read. But it's not particularly deep (more anecdotal) and it didn't lend itself to much discussion. We ended up talking more about dogs we owned, or once owned...but it was a fun book club nonetheless. I would recommend the book, but not for book club discussion.

"This book summarized for me in words all the emotions that come from owning a dog!" by BAZellers (see profile) 04/16/07

I laughed and I cried!
This book is for anyone who loves animals, whether you have ever owned a pet or not.
And to be honest, I don't think Marley was the world's worst dog.

"Anybody who has loved a pet can appreciate this book!" by Phyllika (see profile) 04/17/07

John Grogan did a wonderful job of putting into words the way an animal can slowly work its way into your heart, and become a real member of your family....this book will make you laugh out loud...and will make you cry...but in the end, you will agree that it is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all!

"A touching and heart-warming story of the impact a four legged best friend has on your life." by jcrady75 (see profile) 04/17/07

All animal lovers MUST read this book. The members in our book club all decided that all of the frustration, anxiety and angst that come with owning a pet (especially a neurotic dog) are all worth it ten fold in the end.

"Beautiful story... funny & heartwarmingly written" by julialily (see profile) 06/16/07

I resisted reading this novel because I thought "Who wants to read about a dog?" Boy was I wrong! The author is brilliant at taking you to side splitting laughter and gut wretching tears. It is a wonderful novel that anyone who has every loved a dog would surely appreciate. A must read!

"good enough read" by kellyarvidson (see profile) 07/31/07

Marley reminded me of my dogs. Some good, some not so good, but they all had heart.

"A crazy dog works its way into a family's hearts" by ellentambo (see profile) 08/01/07

Really funny book. Enjoyable read. I actullay bought it for a couple of people for Christmas. It was not neccessarily the most thought-provoking, but it was a lot of fun. A good pick for summer months

"I'm a dog lover but..." by dmc1230 (see profile) 08/15/07

Marley is adorable. Marley is naughty. But the owners are just plain dumb. They could have used a few good sessions with Ceasar the dog trainer... or the Monks of New Skete. True, some dogs are neurotic, but I think the owners were a bit neurotic too. This was "cute" but not especially well-written. Too bad there weren't more pictures of Marley.

"Great book for dog lovers..." by Tela27 (see profile) 08/26/07

Enjoyed reading, even thought my dog is thankfully not as neurotic as Marley, he did have his bad moments. Enjoyed the bond between John and Marley, I have a bond with my lab who is in his senior years and it's nice to know others feel the same way. For someone who has dog or has lost a dog, this is a great book.

"This book is a light read with little depth, not suitable for book clubs." by MCCL (see profile) 09/21/07

I do not recommend this book for book club discussions. There is little depth to any character and the writing is less than one expect from a journalist. Dog lovers or dog owners with unruly dogs might enjoy reliving their own adventures through the book.

"Not a very interesting read" by jalison (see profile) 09/26/07

The book didn't hold my interest, didn't feel particularly connected to any of the characters it could have been a better book if the writer had done a better job.

"It is a cute story about a couple and their dog, Marley." by Kathy1966 (see profile) 04/24/08

The book was cute but def. not one I would have taken on as a summer vacation read.

"A Great Discussion Book" by CCubby45 (see profile) 04/24/08

We had a great time with this book. Most members recalled stories of their own dogs, and members without dogs had a new understanding and appreciation for dog lovers. Most agreed that this book made them laugh outloud, as well as brought tears to their eyes along with some hard sobs.
The writing of John Grogan was engaging and entertaining. Most members also wanted to keep this book in their book collections. It is a book you can read over and over again, and still experience the laughs and sobs.
Read it and see!

"We Laughed - We Cried!" by Diane860 (see profile) 04/24/08

Everyone loved this book! We laughed out loud and cried throughout the book. Our hostess of the evening, who raises guide dogs for the blind, even had her Marley look-a-like lab there for us to meet. She brought him out after we talked and enjoyed snacks. When we arrived and asked where the dogs were (she has three labs), she replied "Do you want to eat or see the dogs - you can't do both".....just like Marley! We had a great night laughing at Marley's antics and telling our own pet stories (everyone had one).

The book is well written (everyone liked his style). It is about a goofy, crazy dog and the life of a newly married couple. They brought a dog into their lives to see if they could nurture it before they had children. This book is wonderful whether or not you are a "pet" person or not. It's a great story.

As much as we liked the book, it was hard to have a discussion on it because with every question we went off talking about our own dog experiences. Was difficult to stay on the book as every question lead to off book discussions.

"Marley & Me" by djforrest (see profile) 04/23/11

I simply loved this book. I am also an animal lover, especially of dogs. This book shed a new light on what a true animal lover really is. Very well written and hilarious, sad, inspiring, motivating and compassionate. A great read with a lot of interesting facts about the breed and some of the challenges some owners may face.
