Twenty-five years ago, there was a gruesome murder in Apostle’s Cove. The newly elected sheriff was Cork O’Connor. Axel Boshey, belonged to the Ojibwe tribe of the Anishinaabe People, and he was accused of murdering his wife Chastity who was pregnant with another man’s child. Cork O’Connor is also a member of the Ojibwe tribe on his mother’s side. Axel and Cork are related. Axel had already been accused and cleared of another murder. His cousin, former husband of Chastity, Clyde Greensky, was shot and killed in a hunting accident, and he was with him. He married Chastity when Clyde died and took care of their son, Sundown. Soon, they had a child, Moonbeam. Could he have actually killed both of them? He was also engaged in an affair with the town librarian who disappeared shortly after their relationship was discovered.
Fast forward twenty-five years. Cork O’Connor receives a call from his son Stephen who works for the Innocence Project while studying to be a lawyer. They have determined that Axel may have been unfairly convicted and imprisoned. They think he is innocent. Axel has recanted his confession made a quarter of a century ago. Stephen wants his retired father to investigate the murder again, as a private investigator. Will anyone remember the details of a murder committed so long ago. Chastity’s mom, a promiscuous woman, by any definition, has continued her reckless lifestyle. She has turned Moonbeam against Patsy Boshey, Axel’s mother, because she believes he murdered Chastity, but did he?
In the course of the investigation danger develops as secrets are revealed, and those who are guilty try to continue to protect themselves. Will the truth come out? Cork engages Henry Meloux, a gifted spiritual man with supernatural gifts, the same gifts that have been bestowed upon Cork’s grandson, Waaboo. He also contacts the former priest, Jude Monroe, who used to help Father Kelsey in St. Agnes. What does he know? Had anyone confessed to him? Now that he runs a shelter in Duluth, Minnesota, will he reveal secrets he could not when he was a priest? The story veers into the supernatural when Waaboo reveals that the malignant spirit of the Windigo has returned, and it is very hungry? Who will be the next victim of violence?
This is a very fast, engaging mystery. The pages will turn themselves and the ending will surprise every reader.
