"Great Read!" by summit99 (see profile) 01/09/10

Our group LOVED this book. We found the in depth depiction of another culture very fascinating; while at the same time being able to relate to the universal human spirit. Our group is essentially around the same age as the main character. As a historical fiction, our group was able to remember the same events talked about in the book and then discuss how different/similar their reactions were to the main charachter. Great choice!

"Not Historically Accurate" by rowchick (see profile) 11/10/10

The author takes what is a true event and takes A TON of creative license with the facts. That being said, I still love the story. I just hate to think that people read this and think that what is on paper is what really happened and/or that the timeline that is represented is really true. I think he could have done more with the middle of the story surrounding the alleged breakdown, and the ending is a little far fetched (And totally false) but overall it is well-written and certainly compelling.

"The Commoner" by julnelms (see profile) 07/10/11

This is our book clubs last read, we meet this coming monday so will add to this after discussion. .Personally, I love the book and went on to investigate further the real story of Empress Michiko. There is a very real believability to this novel and the writing is superb. The Japanese culture of Royalty is so tightly protected that it is very hard to tell what truly goes on inside the palace walls, but the empress has spoken up a few times explaining somewhat, what it has been like to be a commoner and giving up a normal life for that of iconic royalty.
