Gin Phillips took me to the coal mines and hard times of Alabama of the 1930's. Tess may live in physical poverty, but not poverty of the heart and mind. Ms. Phillips' story-telling technique of having each character speak in first person keeps the reader totally engaged. I can't wait to read it again.

The book club hated this book. Most could not finish because it was so boring and difficult to get interested in enough to finish. Those that did finish said it was a waste of time. Spent a total of 5 minutes discussing what little there was to discuss.

This book was a quick read, you really wanted to know what happened. The author really captured the activities going on during this point in time, very well. I highly recommend this book.
