"This selection offered many topics for highly animated discussion" by sluce (see profile) 07/14/06

Our book club generally liked the debate/ debates sparked by this selection, but not all of the members enjoyed the actual reading of the book

We all agreed that this author was scupulous in providing a balanced account of both sides of this tragic story. The Hmong traditions and history were fascinating, and the medical mistakes and heroic efforts were commendable. We have a significant Hmong population in our area and appreciated learning a little about their world view. We wish Western medicine had a little of that view as well.

It was one of our best meetings because it seemed that we all had really interesting insights. I provided a million little pieces of paper with discussion questions on them but we hardly needed them.

"Great read." by swannwsong (see profile) 03/25/08

Five years ago this was our book club's second selection. It is one that stays with me still. Gives great insight and helps one understand Hmong culture.

"cultural awareness today is a very important issue" by nikol777 (see profile) 12/18/08

i enjoyed everyone's opinion about lia's healthcare, the difference between the doctor's perspective and lia's parents, neither were necessarily wrong, just different and somehow they were unable to get past the culutural differences to come up with a working regimen to treat lia the best for both worlds...

An excellent discussion book depicting a very real issue in hospitals in the US. This book describes the difficulty in caring for a Hmong child with seizures when language and cultural experiences clash with expectations. While the descriptions can be heartbreaking, as a pediatric nurse of many years I assure you the issues are very real. This is a thought provoking book.

"Tedious but good story" by bcarroll (see profile) 05/18/15

This was a great discussion book for our book club. Most people thought it was too long and tedious, but the story was great.
