A very engaging novel about a loving family that is affected both positively and negatively by the youngest of five sons announcement at the age of five that he wants to be a girl. Transgender children raise many issues for even loving, accepting families in our American culture, and Frankel's story addresses these issues and offers different perspectives at the same time she simply tells the story of a family, full of joy and sorrow and change and humor, just like any family. This book will provoke much discussion for most book clubs.
This is an emotional book in which each member of a large family deals in his/her own way with the gender dysphoria of one of their members. It is informative and interesting as a realistic presentation of the issues and trials for an individual child and the family, with friends, neighbors and school personnel. When Penn and Rosie's fifth son, Claude, insists that he is a girl and wants to be called Poppy, they believe her and support her in the transition, BUT they don't tell non-family members that she is physically a boy. The family is a fun, dysfunctional conglomerate of intelligent loving people and just a delight to read about. The issues and problems are heartbreaking to read about. It is a book that I will remember forever and recommend to a lot of people.

Great book for a book club. A very 21st century topic written in a fiction book that promotes thought. The characters are developed beautifully.
This book was beautifully breath taking. From page to page the story unfolds and you get wrapped up in it like a warm hug. throughout the story we find a little boy turn more into a man than any man ever could be... and he is not even a he.
