Perhaps, the use of vulgarity a turn-off. Brilliant essayist who shows true courage is opening up his dark youth to the audience. The gloom and doom can get to be a bit much, as does his victim-complex. however, he tries hard to camouflage the pain through exaggerated humor with his approach on otherwise tough subjects of alcoholism, mental disease, addictions, parenting foibles, social prejudices... and within there is bravado and no-shame

Even though it is an autobiography, I couldn’t get myself to like the lead character. I found his descriptives quite brilliant but was frustrated with his inability to progress...he laid bare all his insecurities, but failed to inspire me...
