Absolutely the best book I have read in years...I could not put it down and really learned so much!
This was a story from WWII that I had never heard. I was riveted from the first page to the last.
While we all agreed it was a dark story, we did learn new information & believe this one will stay with us for a long time.
Wonderful, fast paced story that puts you there in the sad horror of the war. Makes you wonder what you would do if faced with the decisions and situations these people faced for many days.
3.5 stars. I really enjoyed the historical aspects of this book & discovering yet another angle of this particular period in history. I had no idea there was an Italian resistance, but certainly found it fascinating to learn a bit about it through this work of historical fiction. Memorable characters people this book & not knowing the history well enough to distinguish or to pick up flaws, this narrative flowed quite seamlessly.
3.75 for pacing.
I Felt like I was in the mountains with Pino. The location descriptions were so wonderful. The book felt off pace-wise there were so many details at times and glossed over sections at others. The relationship between Pino and the Nazi officer was difficult and complicated as he said many times. I do feel as though Pino was conflicted and his retelling May have been a bit of revisionism and apologist glossing over the more difficult parts. I wish I could meet Fr Re. The writer often writes with James Patterson so I felt as though his style and treatment of secondary characters reflected that fast paced crime novel genre. It felt a little fish out of water for me at times.
All in all - I found the book to be so interesting and very informative of not very well known Nazi-occupied Milan.
My favorite part was the end - when the author worked to get closure for Pino.
Because of the length of the book, our book club was going to read only half of the book for our next meeting.
But it wasn't possible. This book keeps you so intrigued about the characters and the time period, no one could put the book down!
This story showed me a bit of history that I was not familiar. Writing could have been tighter but story worth reading for the insight into the past.
I didn’t think the book was particularly well written but the story was interesting
Interesting. Long. Definitely three full acts. Unbelievable story.
Our book club LOVED this book! It was very moving and, at times, difficult to read because of the subject matter, but left us inspired at the obstacles seemingly ordinary people can overcome when faced with extreme adversity. A well-written account of an almost imposs-ble-to-believe true story that celebrates the courage and resiliency of the human spirit.
The life of the main character would be unbelievable except for the fact itâ??s a true story! Events of the main character are jaw-dropping. So much history is revealed of Italyâ??s fate during WWII.
A read whose characters capture your heart and whose stories rivet you to the page. Great book club read!
From page one, I found this book to be interesting and easy to follow. It was graphic in each location and I could picture the scenes as I read. Highly recommend.
