Them gives the readers a front porch view of what may happen during gentrification. I like how the author tried to build a relationship based on a search for understanding between Barlowe and Sandy through their spotty talks at the backyard fence. Funny how in MLK’s day, whites wanted to keep blacks out of “their” neighborhoods, now in Them, they want to kick the whites out.
