"An exciting book about a truelife experience." by melcat (see profile) 03/23/07

I found 'Winterdance' to be a surprisingly interesting and adventure-filled book. Gary Paulsen's humorous way of telling the story of his many excursions with his dogs while training for and racing in the Iditarod had me turning page after page.
I truthfully hadn't expected to enjoy it as much as I did. I now have a deeper respect for the athletes of the Iditarod and the humans lucky enough to race with them.

"Great read. Very funny yet riveting. Any dog lover would enjoy this." by hgress (see profile) 04/10/07

Gary Paulson has written such great fiction, but this memoir of his Iditarod experience is by far my favorite book of his. I didn't know very much about dog racing, but I now have such a great respect for the dogs and crazy people that run this race. Quick read, hard to put down, and very interesting. One of my favorites!

"Great mix of serious hardship and humor!" by egibson129 (see profile) 10/26/07

I absolutely LOVED this book! One of the best I've read in awhile. The author was so good at tempering the difficulties of training for and running in the Iditarod with a strong sense of humor. I have a new respect the the men, women, and especially the dogs that have achieved such an amazing feat!

"Story of getting ready to run the Iditarod in Alaska" by kathaileen (see profile) 12/09/07

Nonfiction account of training for and running the Iditarod race across Alaska. I absolutely loved this book and would highly recommend it to anyone.
After reading Into Thin Air about the Everest climb, I thought someone would have to be crazy to do that. After reading this, it probably is almost as bad
I was sitting in the orthodontist office while my son was getting his braces on (and glad no one was in there except me) laughing out loud. The author is training his dogs to run, which they love to do and he is having trouble holding them back.

"Easy read, Funny. Some parts are intense." by cpratt (see profile) 05/01/08

I enjoyed reading Winterdance. It is funny and amazing. Why anyone would want to run the Iditarod is insane. This was a fast, enjoyable read that is inspiring about following your dreams.

"Interesting" by ellentambo (see profile) 06/19/08

I liked reading this, but I wish it was a written a little better. I felt like I sort of only understood about half of what the author was talking about in regard to the art of dog-sledding. I would have liked to know more about the history of the Iditarod. I was expecting to read something more along the lines of "Seabiscuit" with a personal touch to it. I think this book would be a nice alternative to the "usual" book club book as I am sure many in the lower 48 don't spend a lot of time thinking about this race.

I loved this book. I found my self talking about it to anyone who would listen. I am amazed and glad that Gary Paulsen lived to share his adventure with all of us. If you enjoy reading adventure travel journals, I think you will enjoy this book.

""What a thrilling ride"" by julnelms (see profile) 01/30/10

This is an action packed, gasping read! Gary Paulsen's writing took me right to Alaska and along for the ride of a lifetime. Have a whole different perspective of the Iditarod race. I don't know how he managed to live through this ordeal once, let alone 3 times. Great read!

"Winterdance" by KWest (see profile) 01/05/11

A funny an interesting read for any dog lover or anyone who has ever been interested in the Iditarod. Enjoyed it very much and it had me laughing out loud at parts and welling up with tears at others.

Good book, informative, adventurous. Slows down in the middle but begining and end are great.

"Laugh out loud and hilariously written!" by Shilah401 (see profile) 04/22/11

In 5 years of book club, this is by far still my favorite pick! The shenanigan's the author finds himself in and his artful way of relaying it to the reader is spectacularly captivating! I literally laughed out loud, and cried! I have passed this book around to at least a dozen people and I don't know anyone who didn't love it!
