"Father-Son Trip Gone Wrong" by ginnykin (see profile) 04/25/25

A father son camping trip becomes a harrowing adventure, complete with wildfires, gun toting psychopaths, rattlesnakes, collapsing mines, and a search for lost gold. I worried about all the animals that were trying to survive. I hope all of the horses were okay. ????

I did enjoy the book once I got into it. It really picked up when the father and son went on their journey. I liked that they bonded and got closer.
I liked that the book had a happy ending!!

If this isn’t sufficient,I will type something. I wrote a review on Goodreads right after finishing the book, as I do with all the books I read.

It took a while to get into the story, but it picked up when the adventure started and came to a good conclusion.

"Darker Than the SKy" by ColleenMcD (see profile) 06/12/25

A really insightful look into a father son relationship inside an adventure in Big Sur country. My Book Club is reading this for the month of August. I read it first and could hardly put it down. Can't wait to share and discuss it with my club members.

Interesting father and son relationship story

Interesting story written by a man about guys and male relationships. (I think of typical books for guys as action thriller, spy novels.) I would recommend this for male readers as well as women.

i absolutely urge people to avoid this book. It is full of misinformation. Throughout the book, there were statements that were not accurate - demonstrating that the author did not have the information to be writing about this situation, incident, etc. The final situation where I decided to condemn this book was at the end of the book. The author has Josh saying, "Julie was talking about taking a year and working for the Peace Corps." As a PCV, this statement is highly offensive. One does not "work for the Peace Corps;" we join the Peace Corps after a rigorous application and selection process. And one does not work for the PC for a year. It is a job to which we commit two years. Training alone can take up to half a year - language, customs, situations to avoid, etc. And selection takes much more than the casual attitude that Josh presents. One has to demonstrate a desire for peace in the world, a willingness to give to needy people in a culture that is unfamiliar, and a strong feeling of volunteerism. PCVs are often alone in a strange country and must be strong minded about volunteerism. All of us have previous volunteer experience and have demonstrated our ability to work, without payment, for the betterment of others. Plus, we have training and experience in a field that is needed. Josh shows none of this. A brief discussion with an PCV who has completed service and returned to the US would have provided the writer with some education about volunteer work and living alone in a foreign country. There were probably many other statements in this book that demonstrate a lack of knowledge. Writers should know about their subjects before they spout off. This final example led me to not believe much of this book.

"Father/Son Journey" by [email protected] (see profile) 06/13/25

Story slow to start, Author very descriptive of CA weather and landscape. Father share with son how his life was in the past while they are looking for treasure.

"A Modern Day Western" by Cherim36 (see profile) 06/14/25

Darker Than The Sky has all the elements of a western adventure but with modern over tones. Father and son reconnect with each other while on a horseback camping trip to look for gold. This book was a very enjoyable read.

Not very convincing time line. Difficult to get attached to any character. Not worth the time.

I enjoyed the book. I did have a difficult time reading the book as the print is so small. Right now I am having some issues with cataracts which didn't help.
After I finished thr book I send it on to a book club member to read and to get her feelings about it. Thanks for sending me a copy. I enjoyed it very much.

I received a free copy of this book. I could hardly put it down! I really enjoyed the plot line and the characters in this book. Van Weathers lives on a ranch in the hills of California. Over the years there have been hints of gold hidden in the hills but no one has been able to locate it. It kept me guessing the entire time. The author did a marvelous job building up the suspense and developing the various characters. I would like to read other books by Matt Tracy now. If you like mysteries or stories set in the West you would probably enjoy this book.

"modern day western" by debaparker (see profile) 06/15/25

i received this book free and started to read it the day it arrived. The author builds the mystery of the gold treasure from the first chapter interspersing with flashbacks of his life, as told to his son on a camping trip to find said treasure. I feel that the main character, Van Weathers, and Russ are fully flushed out in the story but not really any of the other characters and they don't really need to be. I read the book quickly wanting to know what happens at every turn. So I would say this is a page turner!

So adventurous, exciting, edge-cliffing, and very much the inspiring tale of a book that I love to read.

"Fighting through fear " by Patsye (see profile) 06/16/25

This is the kind of book that I like to read a chapter at a time and then stop and think about it. It is mostly about a journey camping with a man and his son, and an exploration of the man’s fears, hopes, dreams, and relationships. The writing is thoughtful. I felt that many of the side characters were rather heavily drawn but it does include many shades of gray in morality judgments. It paints word pictures in a love story to the west and its glorious scenery. I felt the end needed more ambiguity, and shouldn't have been wrapped up as neatly as it was, but I found it an interesting read.
