In a remote part of the California desert is a treatment center called The Poppy Fields. There is no charge to come here, but you must submit an application and undergo an intense interview before you are accepted for treatment, this is a place where people come to overcome their grief. For whatever reason they have, after a great loss, some are just not able to go on. The Poppy Fields offers the opportunity to “sleep” for a month or two and upon awakening will still remember their loss, but it will it hurt anymore. But of course you must be willing to take a risk with a possible side effect. Four unlikely strangers and a small dog, have a chance encounter and together they make their way from the Midwest to California and The Poppy Fields.
This is a very thought provoking story about grief and moving on and just what you would be willing to do to make the hurting stop. It is very well written and I especially liked the edges of the pages were red.
I enjoyed this even more than The Measure and look forward to Ms. Erlick’s next book.
