"A book you never knew you needed to read" by TysMommy (see profile) 10/19/09

I was shocked that a book like this remains relatively unknown. Although I have read a number of books on the civil rights movement, none have touched me as this book did. I connected with the characters, related to their pain, in ways that caught me by surprise. I was both inspired to work toward a continued improvement in civil rights in our country, and at the same time, ashamed to be part of a race that battered and persecuted men, women and children to such a horrific extent, just because of the color of their skin. A brilliant work.

Over the past few months, I've read books with African American themes. However, unlike the other books I've read that took place during the Civil Rights movement, this one moved me the most. I found myself rejoicing with the characters when they overcame obstacles and crying with them during their sorrows. I was surprised that I'd never heard of this book, but I feel that everyone needs to read it, no matter the color of their skin.

I read this book over 25 years ago and it is one that has stuck with me. I have recommended it to dozens of people; those who have taken the time to read this important story have all been as moved as I was. It's an investment that is truly worth your time.
