If you like historical fiction, this is a good one. Ihave to admit it started out slow for me and i wasn't too sure about it. But the more you get into the story and the history, the more you want to know. Patsy is Thomas Jefferson's oldest daughter. She knows he loves his family but he devotion to his country runs deep. When her mother dies, Patsy has made a death bed promise and she becomes his helpmate, protector, and constant companion. She witnesses two revolutions (american and french), learns about her fathers liaison with Sally Hemings, etc. The themes present throughout this book - sacrifice and women's limited choices in this revolutionary era- can create hours of discussion. Almost everything we know of Thomas Jefferson is what she let pass to us in posterity in family papers -- which historians agree were certainly edited, both in which ones we have and by what is not there. Makes you want to learn more of Thomas Jefferson and Monticello. Good read
Overall, our club members liked it, but some found it boring and somewhat incestuous with Patsy adoration of her father. Yes it was a different era, but her love was overkill and her father's possessive. Interesting facts about Jefferson, though.
Well researched historical fiction. Fast paced epic about Jefferson's daughter, twists and turns galore.
Very interesting read about Thimas Jefferson's daughter and the life she lead. I love history and this book gives the reader a window in to what Colonial life was like for the upper classes. Weather women didn't have an easy life back then, with very few rights. The book also delves in to Sally Hemmings and the relationship she had with Jefferson.
Interesting and informative novel about Thomas Jefferson's daughter and how they lived their lives and the times they lived in. The politics of their time, provided parcels and insights to current political climate.
Insightful, engaging narrative about the Revolutionary War and the time afterwards when our country was trying to find its way. Really enjoyed the book. I 'read' the book in an audio format from iTunes. The reader/actress was really good.
I usually love historical romance but this was very slow for me for the first 250 pages. It took me a long time to get into the book and once I did, it was then quickly over.
This book led our club to have a spirited and genuine conversation about race issues.
I couldn't put this book down! I learned so much and it sparked my passion for revolutionary history.
Too much of a bodice-ripper for me. I wanted more historical information, less panting, gushing and bosom-heaving.
Most in bookclub loved the book. A few thought it was too long. Personally, the length was fine for me. I read on my kindle and didn’t even realize how long it was. I learned a lot about that period in our history and about our founding fathers. It was interesting. I know I like a book when I can’t wait to get home to read.
The challenges in Martha Jefferson's life are extremely difficult, from her first love being denied due to loyalty to her father, to women having few rights in ownership, finance, or in defense of domestic violence. She was incredibly smart and politically adept,
and became the matriarch of a large and challenging family. She is a heroine, and patriot for our modern world.
Beautiful and interesting account. Loved the details and author’s perspective.
Rated 9 out of 10. Thoroughly enjoyed by all members of the club. Lots to talk about.
