"Hilarious AND Heart-breaking" by monoel (see profile) 02/04/11

I love this book! I know it sounds cliche but I sincerely laughed out loud AND cried through the entire book. The cast of characters is just too much and they will stay with me for awhile. I liked the look this book gave the reader into the male psyche. I predict this will be made into a great movie!

"Do guys like that really exist?" by mcaenki (see profile) 02/15/11

Considering the novel was written by a guy, I am hoping that there are funny, smart, lovable and loving guys like the protagonist, Judd. I was laughing out loud many times while reading the book and though I guessed the outcome quite early into the shiva, I nevertheless enjoyed the journey tremendously.

Great book - I listened to it on the road and was hooked. Very funny!

"Just a read" by AJREADER1981 (see profile) 02/22/11

This book took a while to warm up to...I was literally half way through it before I cared about anyone in the book. There were funny parts, some cleaver parts, but overall it was a bit too over the top to be believable. It seemed as though the author were begging for you to laugh and squirm, it was pretty obvious and I often found myself rolling my eyes with irritation. Maybe that was the point and I don't particularly enjoy feeling that way when I read. Either way, I took it as just a read.

This book was simultaneously funny and sad with several moments of debauchery. Taboo topics are met with humor. I was hooked by the end of the first page.

Hilarious, laugh out loud fun. A mature book that most of us can identify with to some degree. Great fun and great fun reviewing at a meeting!

"So crazy it could be true." by riegerd (see profile) 01/03/12

This book feels like either being in Judd's head or listening to a BFF tell you all about their crazy family. Some parts are so crazy, you know it could happen that way. Loved the way it was written from the get go.

"What a family!" by tompatrice (see profile) 12/06/12

This book made me laugh out loud. The "fly-on-the-wall" insights into the large, dysfunctional suburban, mostly adult Foxman family as they sit shiva for their father, were enlightening, amusing, sometimes shocking, engaging and a great quick read.

"Will make a better movie than book." by Msbrownschmitt (see profile) 10/02/14

It should make for a better movie than a book. I liked how the author spoke through the character, although the characters weren't developed very well. I was interested throughout the story to see what direction the main character took, but several of the things that happen in the story are for nothing. That being said, I still am interested in seeing the movie.... at redbox... not in theaters.

"Oh, How True!" by witchy1 (see profile) 12/28/14

This was a fun romp through a funeral, yes, you heard me right! The interactions between the various members of the family were so true to life, I really enjoyed the read.

"Lots of discussion to be had!" by Burgo49 (see profile) 01/02/15

First off, I was disappointed in this book after reading it, but the discussions we had during our book club helped me look at it in a brand new light so I ended up actually liking it! This book allows for a LOT of topics for discussion. Using the LitLovers questions, we could have talked about this book forever. I was disappointed with the book is because none of the characters were really likeable (save one or two). Although the dialogue was comical, the story was a depressing one. I was hoping for for a happier ending, but it left me wanting to know more. Overall, the book was alright. I definitely recommend it for book clubs because it is so easy to discuss. Have fun!

Some members of our book club said they laughed out loud. Novel is written from man's point of view. Fast, easy read. Good discussion of characters and situations. Movie version on DVD.
