I have mixed feelings about this book. This book tells two stories that are ultimately connected. One takes place in a convent in the 1500s and the other in present day. I would give the historical part of the novel 4 stars because it was interesting and the nuns were characters you could care about. However, I disliked the present day main character (Menina.) I could not find her believable or likeable so this part of the story was 2 stars for me. The ending seemed put together in two minutes. There were many unanswered questions. It left me feeling like it was rushed and not well-thought out.

I thought the idea and concept behind the book seemed promising, but the book was poorly executed. There were too many strange coincidences that drove the story, and it didn\\\'t seem believable to me. The main character was also annoyingly naive.

However, the historical part was better, and the author should probably have stuck to that.

Although I have read several previous books that vary the timeline and characters throughout the book I felt confused by this book. It did not read smoothly and often I was not sure what characters I was reading about. I also felt that alot of editing could have been done. Several parts of the book felt unnecessary and possible lead to the book being too long. The main character was not well developed and I did not connect with her. The premise of the book seemed promising but left me feeling confused and dissatisfied.

Our club generally liked the book, and found it's portrayal of life in the 1500s (and the Inquisition) very interesting and not commonly written about. There were some areas where we thought the story could be constructed better - some elements were never returned to, while other parts got wrapped up with a bow. But we had fun discussing it all.
PS. Do not use the Audible version of this book - the performance is obnoxious.
