My Reviews
We went to a classic this month, as we mostly read contemporary literature and some of us had not read Cather before. The descriptive, evocative language of turn-of-the-century Nebraska was something we all remarked on. This story seemed to be written more as a retrospective, it felt very much like a memoir, rather than more traditional fiction that focuses on some conflict which must be resolved. This book also led to some good discussion about Antonia and other female characters in the context of female roles of the time, and how that compared with social mores as described in other classic literature.
