My Reviews

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

Dramatic, Insightful, Beautiful
You MUST read this book!

“This book is one of my favorite books! It is so different than what I have ever read. Zusak is so detailed in his writing. He writes with picturesque, illustrative, beautiful words. And that is not even coming close to the greatness of the book.

You fall in love with each of the characters. They are so thoroughly and carefully written about. There is great friendships, troubles, sadness, all written so eloquently. I just can't say enough good things about this book. It was hard to put down and I cannot stop thinking of the characters.

Really, truly about great friendships I think

Lots of twists and turns

This book kept you guessing until the end. It was never boring and had so many characters. It was a great read and you always wanted to read just one more page.

Just too long

Wow! What a LONG book! I feel like she could have told the same story with maybe 300 less pages. (mine was the 909 page book). I really liked the plot of the book. What will happen to the characters, etc, but there was just too much ETC stuff for me jammed in and it was just boring. The last 9 chapters I loved because it finally felt like it was free, smooth, get to the point flowing.
I wish the author was more precise about the time that she was telling the story. Maybe remind us what year they were in. I needed to know how old everyone was!
I would not recommend this book, unless I knew they absolutely loved history.

A great story, but too long

This book had a great story of families, those you love, enemies, and everything in between. It was just a bit too long. And there were many medical terms that I could have done without. And since it is set in Africa, there are terms I don't understand. It was an OK read, and I loved the story of the characters, but I just didn't love it!

Have no idea what all the hype is about?!!

First, I can't believe this book has gotten so many good reviews?!!! It was boring. It was uninteresting. I would have stopped reading somewhere in the beginning if it wasn't for part of a book club I am in. The ending ruined the whole thing for me. It just seemed to have NO emotion at all in it. When things happened, without giving anything away, people should have been devastated, hurt, crying, mad, vengeful. There was none of that. It was emotionless. It left me feeling empty and not finished. The ending was so abrupt. I would say it left me wanting more, but the only "more" I want now, is a totally different book!!

Definitely worth the read!

This was a great book! It started quickly and kept going from there! There were maybe 2 or 3 chapters that were a little "slow" for me, but other than that, it was an easy, very good read. There were twists and turns all the time! There were things that you won't see coming. It was refreshing to see things jump out of nowhere that you weren't expecting! Every chapter left you wanting more. I would totally recommend this book! Very suspenseful and entertaining!

A book to get you off your couch

I loved the underlining meaning of this book: We need to be living better stories. Don has done many things with his life that you couldn't compare the two of ours! It makes you want to do more. It makes you know you can't have a great story by "sitting on a couch". I loved the tid bits I got out of it. If I just had read those things with his life story, it would have been a great book. But with him telling us how they made his life a story a movie, it made it slow for me. I was talking with a friend and I believe if I had had the audio book it would have been so much better to hear his sarcasm, his humor and to HEAR his story. Overall a good book to light a match under your butt and do something with your life!

Sad story with hope

This book is well written, read smoothly, even though there are many different characters. I loved how she wrapped up everyone in the end and left no loose ends. I can't believe that things like this happened in the 60's. What a different world we live in from that time to now! It is sad story but is filled with hope. You fell in love with many characters and hated others! A great story. Glad someone could tell is so clearly

I didn't like it

I just didn't like it. No real good reason why. It was about pursuing your "Personal Legend". It just had no meat for me. Didn't fall in love with any of the characters. Just wasn't good for me.

Just OK

This book had a very slow start. There were so many characters and just too much information in the first 100 pages. It was just OK for me. It didn't keep my attention for too long. Things dragged out but then all of a sudden things would happen and you'd wonder 'how'd we get here so fast'? I don't think I will read book 2 and 3 although I do want to know about the main characters. But I think I'll just ask a friend who'll read it to find out the back story!.

Hoping the second book will resolve everything!!

I really wanted to give this 4 stars and I might have if it weren't for the ending. After reading 696 pages (large print edition) it just leaves you hanging and you hope she resolves it in her second book. After diving into this families life and wanting to know more and to see how these 2 relationships end up; she ends it...leaving you to make up how it goes; to have you decided how their conversation will go. (again hoping she resolves it in her second book) At times the book felt quite long although I wanted to know what happened to these characters. The main character, Marta, had so much pizazz but she changes when she has children and I turn from loving her spunk to hating her character. Makes you mad that families follow the same path as the one they really don't want. They try so hard to not be like 'so and so', but they always do. I will read the second one so I know how it turns out! If it is like any of her other books, she will leave you ending until the very end of book 2 with only 2 chapters left. That is how I've found every book I read of hers.

A quick read!

This book is clearly written for teens, but it was an easy simple read. It may make a "choppy" jump in the end, but I'll read the other 2 to see what happens. Wasn't great, wasn't bad...just a good easy read.

Just OK

It was an easy read. But there wasn't much depth. I wanted more "meat". You sort of saw exactly what was going to happen. It was just OK for me.

Just OK

It was a quick read, although there was too many car racing details in it for me that I seemed to skim past all that stuff. It was interesting told from the dog's perspective. If you love dogs and love racing, this book is for you! It was just 'OK' for me.

A Soft Place to Land: A Novel by Susan Rebecca White

Boring, Slow, Unconvincing
Underdeveloped

The author is all over the place in this book. She never develops the characters for you to get a chance to fall in love with any of them. The ending is dumb. I ended up skimming some of it; there is just a lot of "non-important" material I wish she replaced with actually evolving the story. It was so slow. If I wasn't reading it as part of a book club, I never would have finished!

Worth the read!

This was different than anything else I've read before. It kept my attention, it was a quick read, and I fell in love with the characters. There was great suspense as well as a great love story. There was a lot to talk about! Although there are a LOT of unanswered questions, I can't wait to read books 2 and 3.!

Great way to end a series!

This book had so much, yet I feel at times it was rushed so it left out details of circumstances just to end a book. Or I could feel that way because I just didn't want it to end.
It had you on the edge of your seat the whole time, always wanting to flip the page, hoping, dreading, hoping...It had a heavy feeling the whole time just waiting for something great to happen. I like everything about how the author put us through all of that, because how can you sugar coat or make happy endings for everyone with a subject like this?!
I loved it!

Brilliant

When you thought you knew what was happening, the author made more twists and turns that would keep you guessing and wanting you to read more. There are so many colorful characters and so much drama, love, suspense, hatred, action, and mystery!
I think, at times, it seemed a bit long. And in the beginning I had a bit of trouble getting in to it. But when I did, I couldn't put it down!
