A cultural journey through outback Western Australia

Red dirt roads and sun scorched deserts is the perfect place for this unsuspecting thriller to take place. Centered around the old bushman character Gabe Ahern this gritty action thriller set in the rural Western Australian outback sets the reader up for a great adventure from the first chapter.

Gabe is an ageing dogger who makes his living trapping wild dogs for local station owners, while trying to out drink and forget his past. While out on one of his trapping runs, he unexpectedly comes across an attempted execution of Amin, a young Afghan man. This starts the story of how Amin has come by boat to Australia, people smugglers, drugs, corrupt cops, and all sorts of danger ensues.
Trant writes the plot so well, entwining deeper themes of grief, guilt, loss, family, community, alcoholism and lonliness in the outback.

We watch Gabe grow through his dry wit with other characters, reading through the typical Australian "occer-isms" and weaving his confrontation of global events into his solitary lifestyle.

Along the lines of Lee Childs, this action-packed thriller is hard to put down.
