Sad historical truth

Unbelievable. Devastating. This book shed an uncomfortable light of one instance of the treatment of Native Americans. It was difficult to keep up with what was going on the first quarter of the book. Perhaps that was because there were so many people, but also it seemed the book continually jumped back and forth through various time periods and that made it challenging for me to keep up (so 4 stars instead of 5). There is a movie coming out this fall. If the movie even gets one person to look further into this story and try to understand what happened, it will be worth it. I would love to know what the Osage Nation thinks of the movie. This should be required reading for high school students.

Fun
Lighthearted, easy and quick read

Irma decides to sell her bookstore after the death of her business partner without telling her daughters. Of course all sorts of drama ensues because Irma would not talk to her family about what was going on-this annoys the crap out of me in real life and in books. I listened to the audiobook. Dialogue was witty at times.

Writing did not work for me.

There were elements of the writing I really enjoyed. But still, I was so bored with this book. I fell asleep multiple times while reading it (atypical for me). Slavery is disgusting and repulsive. Over the years while reading books about this heavy subject (primarily historical fiction), I experienced strong emotions about the plight of the characters in the books. I did not have that reaction with this telling. I really enjoyed the idea of how the Underground Railroad functioned, but I did not feel anything toward the characters. Yes, there were many things that happened to Cora, but I never felt like I got to know Cora. The book didn't flow well for me. And that could just be my preference. Caesar I think is suppose to be one of the main characters, but then he disappears-with a follow up chapter devoted to him at a later time BEFORE they ran. There was a random chapter on Dr. Stevens and anatomy-it added nothing to the story. I did not move me like I hoped it would.
