My Reviews
Well written! A little slow starting off. Well researched. Good character development. The end seemed to come quickly, I wish that there was less detail in the beginning to leave more room to develop the story.
I really enjoyed this memoir, though I feel there is more to this story. I do wonder if, years from now when certain people are no longer living, if the author will publish a second memoir to fill in the blanks. While at times I did question the accuracy of what was written, I never felt that this was malicious; rather the usual effect of time and the usual biases of human mind. Similarly, I suspect that what has been omitted has been omitted strategically, rather than simply forgotten.
While I found this book to be witty and I certainly appreciated the authors’ uncanny ability to evoke the period, miming its manners and mannerisms - did find it tiresome at times. I learned so much about the occupation of the Channel Islands while reading this book - something I had only moderate knowledge of previously. This novel did force me to ponder the question or what was better, to live in a war zone or to live under occupation and I appreciate the opportunity to think about my deeper philosophical intuitions. In the end I decided that I’d rather die on my feet than live on my knees.
Descriptive and beautifully written, this is a story of overcoming obstacles. This book was, for me, a history lesson full of insight, moving characters, intimacy and resilience.
