My Reviews
This book is so beautifully written, I could see the scenes depicted by the author. The story contained one surprise after another, nothing one would expect, including the surprise in the very last sentence. And the backdrop of this tale is Soviet Russia over a 30-year period. I can't remember a book that left me feeling so gratified when I finished it. Lovely!
I listened to this book on Audible. This was a tough book to get through. I had a hard time connecting with any of the characters and it really seemed long. The various plot lines tied up awkwardly and took an interminable time to connect. For the length of the overall book, when it came time to wrap up the story, Egan seems to have hurried through the ending. I would have given it a three-star rating based on these elements alone. However, the book seemed well-researched and gave a glimpse into everyday American life in World War II. Also, the characters seemed fairly well developed. For these reasons, I gave it an extra star.
