My Reviews
We enjoyed the two parallel stories
Although my book club read the first of the trilogy, several of us read all three books and watched the PBS series. We were all interested in the state of prenatal and delivery care in the 1950's and the terrible poverty these people faced.
A small personal book of growing up in rural Wisconsin in the 1930's. Each chapter is about an aspect of that time and place, snow, farming, country schools and Depression era challenges.
My book club is composed of many people who lived through the story of this book. We come from many points of view and are each sharing our personal stories. Janesville was a union town that benefited from hard working people who gave back to their communities. When GM left, not only families but community strength was lost. The personal stories in this book were well chosen and insightful.
Great insight into women’s issues then and now.
I was unaware of this history so benefitted from reading it
I asked my group to read Hamnet and if possible see the movie. I also asked if people had read Hamlet or watched Shakespeare in Love. It was a great discussion. People came with a broad range of knowledge of Shakespeare and many comments on the lot of women during this period.
