Bernie Madoff type fiction

This is a glimpse into the Madoff-type high roller investment world, with family intrigue and good suspense as we try to figure out who knew what and when. Written in the voice of an in-law torn between ethics and lifestyle. We enjoyed it.

Great writing, inspiring

Rick Bragg is simply a great writer. His writing is beautiful, but what really strikes you is how he can dig deep into the people he writes about. In this book, he inspires us with the love of his family and his low-key but relentless drive to tell people's stories. This very personal account of his life and that of his strong mother, not sugar-coating personal weaknesses and poor choices, was a favorite with our club.

We all need friends like this

Elinor Lipman is very funny but writes in a way that makes you feel you're laughing with her across the table. This book is just fun, unpredictable, crazy, but very human in a woman being pushed to get back into the dating world. Loved it.

Goldfinch - Needs editing-too much repetition

The story is excellent, the characters are very interesting, well developed. However, there are several parts of the book that need drastic editing. Activities are repeated seemingly endlessly, adding little to the story line. We got the point!

Detailed look at the poor

This description of the daily struggle just to find a place to call home was eye-opening. I really had no idea how much effort and time people spend on finding shelter. How can anyone have time or energy to get education, job training or work when they have to continually scramble for rent or a new home? The toll to these families and to society is huge. Wouldn't investment in their futures be paid off by having productive citizens and keeping kids in school and out of prisons?
