Sebastian Barry's novels have been hugely admired by readers and critics, and in 2005 his novel A Long Long Way was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. In The Secret Scripture, Barry revisits County Sligo, Ireland, the setting for his previous three books, to tell the unforgettable story of Roseanne McNulty. Once one of the most beguiling women in Sligo, she is now a resident of Roscommon Regional Mental Hospital and nearing her hundredth year. Set against an Ireland besieged by conflict, The Secret Scripture is an engrossing tale of one woman's life, and a poignant story of the cruelties of civil war and corrupted power. The Secret Scripture is now a film starring Rooney Mara, Eric Bana, and Vanessa Redgrave.
There is a lot for the reader to savor with this book, however the author's own life story adds to the texture of this book. There are many interviews with the author online that help with this back story. People from his own life definitely influenced the story line and characters. Also what helped our club was exploring the ending -- did we like it? why did he write it that way? did it cost him the Booker? I read The Long, Long Way afterward and understand why critics wrote that the ending of The Secret Scripture wasn't unusual, it was just unusual for him.

Our book club loved this - loads to talk about, beautifully written, didn't enjoy the ending but would still recommend it. Poignant story, very authenticly irish.

Although some of the writing was beautiful, the story was contrived, especially in regards to the ending. It was also a very dark and depressing book.
