Lois Lowry has written three companion novels to The Giver, including Gathering Blue, Messenger, and Son.

Having read the book, I would now suggest reading it around the holidays in December. Another bonus is that it is a very short book and a quick read, which can be helpful at a busy time of year. (You could watch the movie, too, but it's not very good, despite performances by Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep.)
