Introduction

She is the last of her kind...

It is not a peaceful time in the Dells. In King City, the young King Nash is clinging to the throne, while rebel lords in the north and south build armies to unseat him. War is coming. And the mountains and forest are filled with spies and thieves. This is where Fire lives, a girl whose beauty is impossibly irresistible and who can control the minds of everyone around her.

Exquisitely romantic, this companion to the highly praised Graceling has an entirely new cast of characters, save for one person who plays a pivotal role in both books. You don't need to have read Graceling to love Fire. But if you haven't, you'll be dying to read it next.

Prologue

Larch often thought that if it had not been for his newborn son, he never would have survived his wife Mikra’s death. It was half that the infant boy needed a breathing, functioning father who got out of bed in the mornings and slogged through the day; and it was half the child himself. Such a good-natured baby, so calm. His gurgles and coos so musical, and his eyes deep brown like the eyes of his dead mother. ... view entire excerpt...

Discussion Questions

1. What does music provide for Fire? How is her connections to music similar or dissimilar to the connection you have to music?
2. At the novel’s end, Fire decides that she was both right and wrong to do what she did to her father because, “Some people were too terrible, no matter if you loved them; no matter that you had to make yourself terrible too, in order to stop them” (page 461). What does she mean by this? Do you agree?
3. Would you describe Fire’s father as evil or mentally ill? Why? In your experience, what is the difference between those who do terrible things because of mental illness and those who are evil? Should these two types be treated differently? Why or why not?

Notes From the Author to the Bookclub

Note from author Kristin Cashore:

Partway through the writing of Graceling, I made up a scene in which Po tells Katsa the story of King Leck. Leck came to court as a child, Po said, from no one knew where, begging for food. “The servants took him in," Po said, "for he told such wonderful stories—wild stories about a place beyond the seven kingdoms, where monsters come out of the sea and air, and armies burst out of holes in the mountains, and the people are different from anyone we’ve ever known.”

At the time I wrote this, it was just a throwaway line. Leck needed to be telling stories about something, so why not monsters and armies? But then, the line began to poke and nag at me. I found myself thinking, hang on, what are these monsters, anyway? How can armies burst out of holes in mountains?

The world of the Dells, where colorful creatures control minds and mesmerize humans with their beauty, and where armies ride horses through underground tunnels, started to grow in my mind. Eventually, it grew so big that I had to write it!
