Introduction

(

The long-awaited new novel?a book of stunning power?by one of the most heralded writers of the past thirty years. Set just after the events of September 2001, about a twenty-year-old woman from a small midwestern farm, making her way, coming of age. Under the novel's languid, easygoing surface, Moore's deft, lyrical writing brings us up against the heart of racism, the shock of war, and the carelessness perpetrated against others in the name of love.

"A Gate at the Stairs"by Kirsten B. (see profile) 12/23/09

In some ways a very unusual book whose characters will stay with you long after you finish the book...they seem real and you want to know what happens to them after you close the cover and finish the book!... (read more)

"A Gate at the Stairs"by Marilyn M. (see profile) 11/08/09

"With irony, humor and sympathy she traces the transition of a young woman from a sheltered farm village into the world she encounters in a midwestern university. Ms. Moore can be outrageous... (read more)
