True Blood meets Supernatural in the kickoff of this urban paranormal fantasy series from an acclaimed author. Readers enter a dystopian San Francisco filled with empaths and vampires embroiled in political unrest—and Book 1 is just the beginning.

Much as she wishes otherwise, superstar political consultant Olivia Shepherd was born a powerful empath. It’s a legacy she walked away from long ago—but when she wakes up one morning to find Elsa, a tenacious time-walker, standing in her kitchen, she realizes she can no longer ignore her gifts. She is quickly plunged into the hidden world of powerful “Others” and drafted to work for the Council, a shadowy organization that summons the fog to San Francisco to obscure their involvement in human affairs.

Complicating matters further is Olivia’s new love interest, William. A centuries-old vampire, William is far too jaded to take an interest in human affairs—but Olivia no longer has the luxury of remaining impartial. As shocking details from Olivia’s own past emerge and her role in the Council begins to take shape, will she rise to the challenge of her destiny? Praise:

Praise: “Politics, romance, and a compelling protagonist power this series starter . . . The San Francisco setting enriches the fantasy subject with vivid detail and a charming blend of fact and fantasy—the Bay Area’s fog is both spookily atmospheric and a clever element of the worldbuilding. This book is ideal for readers with modern values rooted in anti-facism. Richly engaging characters and a deft blend of the magical and deeply human populate this enthralling world.”—BookLife Review, EDITOR’S PICK

“A rollicking supernatural jaunt through time that leaps out of the famous San Francisco fog and right onto our latest news pages. Davis combines her inside knowledge of Bay Area politics with a gripping tale of vampires and shape-shifters that leaves us never quite looking at the city the same way again.”—David Callaway, former Editor-in-Chief, USA Today

PROLOGUE

Most of you are probably familiar with the fact that San Francisco is a foggy city. What few people know is the real reason for the fog. San Francisco’s weather, despite what the nightly news might say, is controlled by a powerful spell. This spell conjures up the cool, wet fog to keep people from seeing what is really going on around them. The fog tumbles across the hills and mountains like a great gray-white wave, pressing inward until it erases San Francisco from view. On the most foggy days and nights, people can barely see more than the hand in front of their face, and it can be difficult to know if what you are seeing is real. That’s when the city’s Others— fairies, witches, vampires, and werewolves—can meet. They attend to their business in the darkness of night, the light muted, the air damp and gray. ... view entire excerpt...
