Introduction

In California’s central valley, five women and one man join to discuss Jane Austen’s novels. Over the six months they get together, marriages are tested, affairs begin,
unsuitable arrangements become suitable, and love happens. With her eye for the frailties of human behavior and her ear for the absurdities of social intercourse, Karen Joy Fowler has never been wittier nor her characters more appealing. The result is a delicious dissection of modern relationships.

Dedicated Austenites will delight in unearthing the echoes of Austen that run through the novel, but most readers will simply enjoy the vision and voice that, despite two centuries of separation, unite two great writers of brilliant social comedy.

Our club watched this movie for our first meeting of the fall after taking a break over the summer. I did not read the book, but we loved the movie!

"Disappointed after all the hype"by Melissa H. (see profile) 06/18/08

I read this because of all the hype surrounding it especially for book clubs. I can't say I was overly impressed. I've read similar books that had better character development and more exciting plots.... (read more)

"I found it hard to follow and badly written."by Sally H. (see profile) 03/09/08

I found the description of the book club fakey. I'm not a fan of Jane Austen so that didn't help my reading. The only fun thing about the book were the quotes and critiques at the end of the book.

"Read it if you like Jane Austen"by Julia D. (see profile) 02/26/08

The book goes slow at the beginning. If you are not a Jane Austen fan, the book is mostly dull. The characters are tied to specific books and development of their lives are intertwined with ... (read more)
