Why does Dostoevsky refer to Voltaire in the beginning of the story?
Why does the narrator call himself ridiculous?
Why does Dostoevsky accuse himself of the problems of humanity? And how does that differ from more modern philosophies on human suffering such as Marxism?

Pair the reading with Voltaire's Micromegas
by alexajennelle (see profile) 02/03/21"Micromegas" is a work of satire and is considered to be one of the first pieces of science fiction. The main character, a giant from another planet, is modeled after Newton and is a play on Newton's famous quote: "If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." Contrary to Dostoevsky, Voltaire's worldview is atheistic, yet he too is taking aim at the same problems of human pride, vanity, and cruelty.
I included these two works together because Dostoevsky alludes to Voltaire's "Micromegas" within his own short story. Dostoevsky is both taking inspiration and critiquing the ideas presented in Voltaire's short story. I hope this will help us better understand each author's point of view and will enable us to better be able to assess the strengths and weaknesses of their arguments.
