Introduction

"We all hold a beast inside. The only difference is what form it takes when freed."

Rain Ryland has never belonged anywhere. He’s used to people judging him for his rough background, his intimidating size, and now, his orphan status. He’s always been on the outside, looking in, and he’s fine with that. Until he moves to New Wurzburg and meets Friederike Burkhart.

Freddie isn’t like normal teen girls, though. And someone wants her dead for it. Freddie warns he’d better stay far away if he wants to stay alive, but Rain’s never been good at running from trouble. For the first time, Rain has something worth fighting for, worth living for. Worth dying for.

Excerpt

ONE
A strangled scream accompanied the gratifying crunch of breaking bones.
“We gotta go,” Moth said, turning the pockets of the guy at his feet.
Rain relaxed his fists and stared down at the thug he’d been pounding. Blood pulsed under the swastika inked on the guy’s temple, making the tattoo move like a living thing. He wanted to kill it. ... view entire excerpt...

Discussion Questions

1. Rain has felt he has never belonged and has been misunderstood. People have made assumptions about him because of his size and background. Have you ever felt that someone put you in box without really understanding who are you? How did this make you feel? Have you ever done that to someone else? What, if anything, have you done to change a person’s opinion of you? What have you done to try and better understand someone else?

2. Have you ever gone out on a limb for a friend or family member? What made you take the risk? Was it worth it? If you haven’t, what stopped you?

3. Haven means refuge, a sheltered place. After reading the book, why do you think Mary chose that title?
