Introduction

Plenty of guides can teach you about mystery shopping, but this book will show you how to exchange your evaluation and writing skills for luxury experiences. These shops include fine dining establishments, boutique hotels, luxury retail stores, spas and resorts, cruises, timeshares, independent bed and breakfasts, high-end bars and clubs, banking and wealth management, and big-ticket consumables.

Mystery shopping has been around since the 1940s, and now it’s a multi-million dollar a year industry. The reason is simple: brands want insight into the consumer experience so that they can meet your every need and desire. This is especially true for companies targeting wealthy clients.

Providing feedback for luxury brands is different than for everyday experiences. High end brands target the educated, wealthy elite - “the accomplished” - because that is where the money is. And it is a lot of money. As such, smart mystery shoppers who can make keen observations and communicate them well are in very high demand.

There are three main reasons for this demand: 1. Their average patron not willing to trade their “experience” for any price, 2. Not everyone who can afford luxury can also write their way out of a wet paper bag, and 3. This consumer market is remarkably, staggeringly lucrative.

So what does that mean for you? If you are a hip-pocket entrepreneur willing to take notes through dinner in exchange for reimbursement of your $300 dinner and bar tab, then this is the right book for you.
