Discussion Questions

(1) The relationship among Mark, Hans, and Yukari is delicate as Mark and Hans are close friends while Hans and Yukari are married. So their relationship oscillates among friendship, love, love-triangle, and even obsession. Although the novel never address the moral issue on their relationship, their relationship appears so natural. How do you, as a reader, perceive this relationship? Do you approve or disapprove? Do you feel compassionate or resentful for their relationship? How do you feel about the conclusion of the novel?

(2) The secondary motif of this novel is the idealism and the disillusion with which the employees of the United Nations struggle. Are you surprised with this struggle, or do you feel it’s normal? Reading this novel, do you want to support the UN, or do you feel against the UN?

(3) The family heritages among Mark, Yukari, and Hans plays a key factor to bond them together. Consider your own family heritage, and see if you would fit into the bond among Mark, Yukari, and Hans, as an additional member of their bond. Yes, or no, and why? Discuss your thoughts on this with other book club members.
