Introduction

Remember Joan is the account of a daughter beside her mother as they face a life disrupted by Alzheimer's disease. The book opens with a wedding and closes with a funeral. Embedded between these two ceremonial rituals are two tales, a story of the mother's decline and death due to Alzheimer's and a story of the author's relationships and life as the daughter of Joan. Humor is the family's favorite coping strategy when damage control is necessary. In the end, this book is not only a tribute to Joan's life, but a tribute to all who try to create a celebrated life with the people that surround them.

Joan and her family used humor as a tool to cope on many occasions. How effective do you think this tool is, and is it always inappropriate to laugh at unfortunate situations? What is something that Joan taught Candy that you found endearing?
What are some of the best teachings you gathered from your own mom? How much of a feminist was Joan really? Is feminism losing ground today? Are the author's pro-choice beliefs inconsistent with her love of children?
