Introduction

(May 1943. On a remote island in the South Pacific, a squad of U.S. Marines has landed to do battle. But they begin to realize that the battleground holds an ancient secret more terrifying than any enemy army. July 2008. A new kind of serial killer is stalking the slums and skyscrapers of Boston. The bodies are found posed and mutilated in ways that the police officers in charge have never seen before. Their investigation takes them around the world and through time and history-from a mysterious salvaged submarine, to a barbaric prison, and finally back to the sinister island in the South Seas where something inhuman has been biding its time.
