Introduction

Let's get this clear right away: I'm a dog. I'm 1'10" and weigh 63 lbs, and although I'm a mutt on the outside, I'm a purebred on the inside. My good nature comes from the Golden Retriever side of the family, while my stubbornness is clearly from my Chowchow bloodlines. I've got Rastafarian ears, a black tongue for licking, and paws that should be on a dog twice my size.

I type 60 words a minute.

My name is Bo, and this is my story.

From shelter dog reject to beloved pet and popular doggie blogger, Bo Hoefinger's life has been anything but ordinary. Join this incorrigible canine as he welcomes us into his life, complete with his wacky "parents," a constipated feline housemate, and chipmunk warfare.

Chapter 1: Of All The Gin Joints In All The World…

We met back in the early ‘90’s, December of ’92 to be exact. I just had a major blowout with my first, somewhat dysfunctional family and decided that it was best for all if I just left. My foster dad gave me a ride to nowhere and before I knew it, I was at a boarding house in upstate New York. The place was great, warm with plenty of company, and their cheesy poof biscuits were to die for. On the downside, it was loud and smelly, not unlike me. ... view entire excerpt...

Discussion Questions

From the author:

Dogs bring so much joy and craziness to our lives. Our house is full of fur, the wood floors have seen better days, and dog toys are everywhere. Yet, we wouldn’t have it any other way. What is the funniest thing your dog has ever done? What does your dog bring to your life? Do you give your dog a voice; ask yourself what he/she is thinking when you look at them?

Notes From the Author to the Bookclub

Note from the author:

In 2006, our rescue dog Bo was fourteen, and getting into ‘bonus’ time. I got the idea to write a book to give to my wife for Christmas, so she would have something to keep his memory alive long after he passed.

There were so many wonderful memories of my wife and him since the two of them reminded me of ‘I Love Lucy’ meeting up with ‘Marley’ the bad dog. Rather than writing it through my eyes, I decided to use Bo’s ‘voice’ and write the book through the eyes of man’s best friend.

Bad to the Bone focuses on how Bo—and two seemingly normal people—wreak havoc on an unsuspecting world while creating a lifelong bond in the process. All the stories are true, and the only tears shed will be tears of laughter.

Every dog has the potential to change a human’s life, given the opportunity. One lonely, frightened dog sitting in cage staring back at you in a shelter can make a bigger difference in your life than you would ever expect.

Bo’s book is dedicated to rescue workers and he donates 10% of his proceeds to help homeless animals.

Woof!
