I discovered this book when it was an option for assigned summer reading my 13 year old son going into 8th grade. I enjoyed reading Ben Carson\'s perspective of growing up against all odds and persevering in a profession where he felt like the underdog, but committed himself to his dream of being a brain surgeon. My 10 year old son who will only read non-fiction books, also enjoyed reading this book during our evening share reading. Then we watched the movie together.

Everyone felt they got a bit of insight into the man. Had not expected this to be so timely (chose it in March) but all were glad to have read it and it made a good discussion.

I did use the book as an inspiration in a Communication class I teach at the Community College.

It was not very well written....
